2010 Management Excellence Awards

The winners of the Management Excellence Awards were announced at the 2010 LGMA Annual Conference in Strahan in October 2010.  These Awards aim to:

  • Recognise leadership and excellence in Local Government in Tasmania
  • Highlight to LGMA members outstanding achievements, initiatives and innovation in management practices and to encourage the adoption of best practice in Tasmanian Councils
  • Enhance the profile of LGMA Tasmania and promote awareness of the role played by Local Government professionals.

The winner of the Open Award Category is Glenn Doyle, General Manager of the Huon Valley Council. 

Glenn's career in Local Government began in 1993, culminating in his appointment as General Manager of Huon Valley Council.

Mayor Armstrong, who nominated Glenn, comments that his leadership and interpersonal skills have come to the fore as he has spearheaded organisation wide innovations to improve service delivery and to increase Council's transparency and accountability  At the same time, Glenn has been looking to the future in the development of long term plans to ensure the Council's sustainability.  Glenn leads by example and with great enthusiam.  He leads a relatively new senior management team, 40% of whom are women, encouraging them to think outside the square. 

In summary, Mayor Armstrong says that Glenn demonstrates management excellence by his strong leadership style, his dedication to improvemenet and innovation in the organisation and the community and daily contribution he makes to improve the lives of so many people.

The winner of the Aspiring Manager Category is Angela Matthews, Executive Officer at Break O'Day Council.

As might be expected in a small council, Angela's role encompasses a wide range of activities and tasks. Mayor Legge, who nominated Angela, says that Angela picks up and runs with every challenge she faces.  He constantly receives accolades for the sensitive manner in which she deals with the wide range of people with whom she works and interacts.  She also takes the opportunity to suggest and introduce improvements and new ideas in a way that ensures acceptance and ownership. 

Angela is strongly involved in the community in which she lives.  Angela was extensively involved in the recovery process after the 2006 bushfires on the East Coast.  She is now the Deputy Emergency Management Co-ordinator for the municipal area.  She also holds executive positions in a number of community organisations.  This year, Angela partipated in the LGMA Emerging Leaders Program and she is currently enrolled in a Graduate Certificate of Management.
